Carol Wickersham is the founder and coordinator of No2Torture, a grassroots, national, faith-based movement. She is a Presbyterian minister who works at Beloit College as an adjunct faculty member in the Sociology Department. Wickersham serves on the Board and Program Council of the National Religious Coalition Against Torture (NRCAT). In the 1980's she was Associate Pastor at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Palo Alto.
Terrence Karney is a former Army Interrogator, and Instructor. He served as a Staff Sergeant with the 223rd Military Intelligence Battalion of the California Army National Guard. “Insight through inquiry” is the 223rd’s motto. In 2003 Sergeant Karney was the Non-Commissioned Officer in charge of keeping V Corps' Interrogation Battalion up to date on the enemy's situation. Later he managed collections in the Northern Tip of the Sunni Triangle in Iraq. From 1994 until he left the Army in 2009 he was an interrogation instructor, helping to train at least 300 students. As a teacher he has an insider's perspective not only on the art of interrogation but also on the doctrine.
Banafsheh Akhlaghi, Esp., is the Western Regional Director of Amnesty International. She founded the National Legal Sanctuary for Community Advancement (NLSCA), a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the human rights and dignity of Middle Eastern, Muslim, and South Asians peoples. NLSCA emerged as one of the lead advocates of human rights for this community in the post-9/11 era. Prior to practicing law, Ms. Akhlaghi was a professor of Constitutional Law at the John F. Kennedy Unviersity School of Law.
Rita Nakashima Brock is a theologian, author, and international scholar of religion. She is Founding Co-director of Faith Voices for the Common Good, which is dedicated to create a greater public awareness of the shared values of the country's diverse religious organizations and leaders. During 2001-2002, she was a Fellow at the Havard Divinity School Center for Values in Public Life. Dr. Brock will give the closing reflection for our Multifaith Worship Service.
