Can't go to Sacramento? WRITE A LETTER!
"Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy" (Pr. 31:9). Support in welfare, health, & even prenatal care is in jeopardy in California. Those already living on the thin edge due to the economic crisis are now being pushed into abject misery, homelessness & even loss of life. We MUST witness for justice! If you could not be in Sacramento, BE SURE TO WRITE/FAX A LETTER! Read more for the information you need to take action on this critical issue!
The faith voice is VERY powerful, and every time you speak, you help make a difference. Let our state lawmakers know that cutting services to those already in economic peril is not a moral way to balance the budget.
WHAT TO INCLUDE IN YOUR LETTER(S):
Letters should focus on two things -
1) The utter immorality of cutting people already in peril - people whom the private sector has abandoned or cannot help -
2 ) AND that we are insisting that they count the federal stimulus FIRST, then decide if they still have to make cuts. There is over $30 billion in stimulus that is meant to defray state expenses, and they are not adding that in before hearing what needs to be eliminated. That message is especially strong for the Governor should people also wish to deliver letters to him.
ALSO - PLEASE do NOT use soft language. The term "balancing the budget on the backs of the most vulnerable" is just sneered at by the anti-government/anti-tax people. Use strong language about legislators' need to be accountable for their actions. Use VERY strong language about justice.
SEND YOUR LETTERS TO:
1) Your specific legislator and signed by you as a constituent (so they are not generic) then you can FAX them to the IMPACT office at 916-488-7310;
2) PLUS ADD letters (it can be the same letter - different address) to two of the BIG FIVE (the Speaker of the Assembly Karen Bass; Senate Pro Tem Darrel Steinberg; Assembly Minority Leader Sam Blakeslee; Senate Minority Leader Dennis Hollingsworth, and the Governor) - who begin meeting on the budget today. (See contact info below.)
BIG FIVE: We just learned that the Budget Conference Committee is finishing their work Monday June 15 and moving the work to the "Big Five" - the Speaker of the Assembly Karen Bass; Senate Pro Tem Darrel Steinberg; Assembly Minority Leader Sam Blakeslee; Senate Minority Leader Dennis Hollingsworth, and the Governor.
For those not attending, please send your letters to:
Karen Bass, Assembly Speaker, FAX 916-319-2147 or assemblymemberbass@assembly.ca.gov.
Darrell Steinberg, President Pro Tem, FAX: 916-323-2263 or seantor.steinberg@sen.ca.gov
Dennis Hollingsworth, Senate Minority Leader, FAX 916-447-9008 or IF YOU ARE A CONSTITUENT (a very bad policy for a statewide leader) go to his Senate site at:
http://cssrc.us/web/36/contact_us.aspx and leave a message.
Sam Blakeslee, Assembly Minority leader
FAX: 916-319-2133. Email: assemblymember.blakeslee@assembly.ca.gov
Governor Schwarzenegger: FAX: 916-558-3160 or 916-445-4633. There is no direct email, but you may reach him via http://www.gov.ca.gov/interact. His district offices may be found at:http://www.gov.ca.gov/interact#contact. We advise sending a FAX after 5 p.m. when the machines are less heavily used.
For email you may also use our IMPACT site, then click on your legislators to go directly to their email:
